Just Keep Swimming…

My cap topper – May ’24

Sitting here surrounded by beakers, pipettes, and the constant hum of machinery, I can’t ponder my journey through graduate school. Days blend into nights, and weeks fade into months, all in pursuit of that master’s degree. Amidst the chaos of the lab, there’s a glimmer of hope. The promise of completion and the chance to finally take a breather.

Graduate school is often portrayed as a time of exploration and academic growth. While it does have its moments of brilliance the reality is more demanding. Balancing coursework, research, building a lab database, and personal life can feel overwhelming at times… yet somehow we push through.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of lab life lies a yearning for some downtime.
I yearn to break free from the world of labs and chemical odors for a brief moment and revel in the simple joys of life beyond academia. Picture idyllic Sundays spent lazing in the park or losing yourself in a book without the weight of impending deadlines. The weekends should be a time for self-care, but of course, they’re currently filled with lectures and exams.

My days are mostly spent in the lab, running experiments, crunching data, or fixing equipment. It’s always busy but never boring. The lab has always felt like a home. My lab neighbors for the last nine years have been amazing. We share laughs, struggles, and victories, all bound by our love for science and discovery.

As I approach the culmination of my journey, I hope for a deserved respite. The prospect of crossing that stage to accept my degree fills me with pride and achievement. However, beyond the grandeur of graduation ceremonies lies something valuable: the opportunity to reclaim my time and unearth a new version of myself outside academia.

To my peers navigating heaps of papers and endless experiments as graduate students, I extend this nudge: You possess resilience and competence, and you are not on this path. Keep forging and pursuing your aspirations relentlessly; remember that brighter days await you. When that moment arrives, do not hesitate to pause for a moment, inhale deeply, and relish the taste of freedom. For you have truly earned it.
